Welcome to the Department of English, Madhabdev University. The Department of English is one of the oldest academic departments of Madhab dev University, formerly Madhabdev College, where English was introduced as a core subject for undergraduate studies in 1964.
The Department of English takes pride in its dedicated faculty, enthusiastic students, and vibrant academic activities. Actively engaged in teaching and research, the department has attracted students and research scholars from various parts of the state. At present, it offers programmes leading to the BA, MA, and PhD degrees.
The distinctive trait of the department is its inherent multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach. The courses and papers offered by the department, along with the research areas pursued by the faculty and research scholars, reflect its distinctive focus on diverse fields and interdisciplinary studies. The specialized courses offered by the department include areas like Indian Writing in English, American Literature, African Literature, Gender Studies, Translation Studies, Women’s Writing, Writings from India’s Northeast, Literary Theory, European Literature, Language & Linguistics and others.

Goal & Objectives of the Department of English:
The goal and objectives of the Department of English is to foster academic excellence, critical inquiry, creativity, and effective communication through the study of language and literature. It seeks to create an inclusive and intellectually vibrant environment that cultivates literary awareness, cultural understanding, and research aptitude among students.
Year of establishment: 2019
The Department of English at Madhabdev University traces its origin to the founding of its predecessor institution, Madhabdev College (originally Narayanpur College), in 1964. It has evolved alongside the college’s growth and the institution’s upgradation to full university status in 2019 as soon as the erstwhile Madhabdev College was upgraded to a full-fledged public state university through The Madhabdev University Act, 2017 (Assam Act No. XXXV of 2017), passed by the Government of Assam on 7 September 2017.

It is dedicated to imparting knowledge that fosters responsibility, instil human values, equips learners to meet emerging challenges, and enables them to contribute effectively to the welfare of their community and nation.
